The Department
The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the technical departments of the Central University of Kashmir, located at the Tulmulla campus in Ganderbal. It was established to address a specific regional need: the Kashmir Valley lies in Seismic Zone V, the highest seismic hazard category in the country, and carries a large stock of masonry and non-engineered construction alongside rapidly expanding modern infrastructure, a heavy snow load and a short, cold-weather construction season. The Department offers postgraduate and doctoral education in Structural Engineering, built around analytical rigour in structural mechanics and dynamics, competence in modern computational and experimental methods, and direct relevance to the codes, materials and hazards that graduates will meet in practice. Students work with IS 456, IS 1893 and IS 13920 alongside international design frameworks.
The Department is deliberately compact. Three core faculty members, all with doctoral training and international research experience, teach a small cohort intensively, and every M.Tech student works directly with a supervisor from the first semester. Two distinct student communities are served: fresh graduates in the full-time regular M.Tech programme, and practising engineers from industry, public sector undertakings and government departments in the AICTE-approved Working Professionals programme, which delivers the same curriculum and the same faculty through evening, weekend and holiday classes. Doctoral scholars pursue independent research under faculty supervision.
Uniquely among departments of the University, Civil Engineering also functions as an operational engineering arm of the institution. Faculty hold formal appointments as Assistant Executive Engineers and are responsible for the design and supervision of campus infrastructure — the Central Workshop, the Kitchen and Dining Facility at the Arts Campus and the engineered subgrade for the upcoming Science Block were all designed and supervised in-house. This arrangement keeps teaching grounded in practice and gives students live construction sites a few hundred metres from their lecture hall.
Vision
To be a centre of excellence in structural engineering education and research for the Himalayan region — producing engineers who can design safe, sustainable and resilient infrastructure for seismically active and climatically demanding environments.
Mission
- Deliver rigorous postgraduate and doctoral education in Structural Engineering grounded in both analysis and experiment.
- Conduct research addressing seismic resilience, structural fire safety and sustainable construction materials relevant to Jammu & Kashmir.
- Provide technical consultancy and design services to the University and to public and private agencies in the region.
- Build laboratory infrastructure that enables experimental research at a scale rarely available in the region.
- Extend engineering knowledge beyond the campus through outreach, disaster-preparedness work and public engagement.
