Future Plans & Roadmap 2026–2030
The Department's plan for the coming four years builds on what has already been established: a functioning research grant, patent-generating research lines, in-house design capability and international academic connections. The priorities are set out in the order the Department intends to pursue them.
1. Structural Engineering Laboratory Complex
Establish a dedicated structural testing laboratory with a strong floor and reaction wall, servo-hydraulic actuators and data acquisition capability. Faculty have designed such facilities at IIT Roorkee, Sheffield and Edinburgh; the objective is to bring that capability to Kashmir, where no comparable facility currently exists.
| Phase | Period | Facility |
|---|---|---|
| Phase I | 2026–27 | Materials and concrete technology laboratory, fully equipped |
| Phase II | 2027–28 | Strong floor and reaction wall; servo-hydraulic actuator system |
| Phase III | 2028–30 | Shake table facility for dynamic testing — a regional first |
2. Centre for Seismic Resilience of the Himalayan Region
Formalise the Department's seismic research into a dedicated centre, using the HEFA research grant as the seed. The centre would house probabilistic seismic hazard work, a regional building-stock inventory, and a rapid post-earthquake assessment capability for the J&K administration.
3. Faculty Expansion
Recruit faculty in geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, water resources and environmental engineering to broaden the Department beyond its current structural specialisation and support a wider programme portfolio.
4. Formal International Partnerships
Convert existing individual research relationships into institutional MoUs — with the University of Edinburgh, the University of Leeds and the University of Sheffield as first candidates — enabling structured student and faculty exchange, joint supervision of doctoral scholars and joint grant applications.
5. Consultancy Cell
Establish a formally constituted departmental consultancy cell offering structural audit, NDT, proof-checking and vibration control design to government departments, PSUs and private clients across J&K — generating revenue and giving students exposure to live professional practice.
6. Patent Portfolio & Technology Transfer
Progress the published patent applications to grant, and pursue commercialisation of the fire-resilient and thermally efficient wall systems, which have direct application in Kashmir's construction market. Target: ten filed patents by 2030.
7. Research Output Targets
| Metric | Target (2030) |
|---|---|
| Q1 journal publications per year | 12 – 15 |
| Sanctioned research projects | 4 – 5 (₹15 crore cumulative) |
| PhD scholars enrolled | 20 |
| PhD degrees awarded | 10 |
| Patents filed | 10+ |
| Laboratories operational | 4 fully equipped |
| International MoUs | 3 – 4 |
8. Regional Engagement
- Annual Structural Engineering Conclave hosted at CUK, bringing together academia, the J&K Public Works Department and private consultancies
- Certificate courses for practising engineers in earthquake-resistant design and structural fire safety
- School outreach programme adapted from the UK Primary Engineer model
- Technical advisory support to district administrations on seismic safety of public buildings
