The Department

The Central University of Kashmir launched an innovative postgraduate programme in Convergent Journalism in 2011 under the School of Media Studies. In 2024, the Department was renamed the Department of Communication and Journalism and the postgraduate programme was renamed M.A. in Communication and Journalism, broadening its scope to include the major areas of mass communication and journalism.

The Department prepares students to produce and manage content across print, radio, television, web, social media and other digital and interactive platforms. The curriculum integrates theory with practice in reporting, writing, editing, photography, audio-visual production, documentary filmmaking, design, digital media and communication research. Internship and capstone work provide professional and project-based exposure.

The Department seeks to develop skilled, ethical and socially responsive media professionals. Graduates may pursue work in journalism, editing, content management, public relations, social media, filmmaking, media production, cinematography, photojournalism, research and related fields.

Achievements

·       The Department developed a practice-based convergent media programme and later broadened it as M.A. in Communication and Journalism.
