Department of Law, School of Legal Studies

The Department of Law at the Central University of Kashmir was established in 2011 under the School of Legal Studies with the vision of developing competent, thoughtful, and socially responsible legal professionals. The Department is committed to providing quality legal education that combines academic rigour with a strong understanding of justice, ethics, and public responsibility. Over the years, it has emerged as a promising centre of legal education and research in Kashmir.

Since its establishment, the Department has been enriched by faculty members with diverse academic backgrounds and areas of specialization. Their collective expertise contributes to a vibrant academic environment focused on legal scholarship, research, and the pursuit of justice. The Department began its journey in 2011 under the distinguished coordinator ship of Prof. S.M.A. Qadri, retired Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Kashmir. In 2012, Prof. Mehraj Uddin Mir joined as Professor and became the first formal Head of the Department and founding Dean of the School of Legal Studies. In 2015, he was appointed Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in the Department's journey and reflecting its commitment to academic excellence.

At present, the Department is headed by Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmad Mir, who also serves as Dean of the School of Legal Studies. Under his leadership, the Department continues to expand its academic activities, strengthen its research profile, and create meaningful opportunities for students.

The Department of Law is also committed to making legal education accessible, inclusive, and student-friendly. It has introduced several initiatives aimed at supporting students and reducing financial barriers. These include a Credit-Based Fee Structure, under which students pay fees in proportion to the credits they undertake; an Earn While You Learn initiative, through which selected students can work with faculty members and various departments for fixed hours while receiving a stipend; and SWAYAM Course Flexibility, which enables students to complete up to 40% of their coursework through nationally accredited online SWAYAM courses. In addition, the Department maintains a Student Aid Fund to provide financial assistance to deserving and meritorious students facing financial difficulties.

With its focus on academic excellence, accessible education, research, and social responsibility, the Department of Law, Central University of Kashmir, continues to nurture future legal professionals and contribute to the advancement of justice and the nation.

Shaping Legal Minds. Serving Justice. Building the Nation.
